Why 31 inch inseams are hard to find

Most brands offer 30 and 32 inch inseams. 31 inches is skipped entirely. A customer wearing a 31 inch inseam is left choosing between a jean that stacks at the ankle or one that exposes the sock. A 31 inch length requires its own patterns, grading, and inventory — separate from the lengths on either side of it. The economics favor even numbers.

Todd Shelton makes jeans in its own factory in the United States. A 31 inch inseam is cut and graded individually, the same process used for every other length in the collection.

How to measure your inseam at home

The most reliable way to find your inseam is to measure a pair of jeans that fit well. Lay them on a flat, rigid surface. Smooth out the fabric and keep the outseam straight. Place a measuring tape at the middle of the crotch seam, where the two legs meet. Extend the tape to the bottom hem.

Todd Shelton inseams are measured before shipping with a tolerance of ¼ inch. A 31 inch inseam ships between 30¾ and 31¼ inches. All-cotton denim shrinks up to ½ inch after several launderings. If your measurement falls between 30 and 31 inches, the decision comes down to preference. Order 31 if you prefer a clean line with no break. Order 30 if you prefer the jean to sit higher on your footwear.

Every jean ships with a confirmed leg opening width measured before it leaves the factory. They apply to every jean regardless of inseam length. Each pair is individually scaled and cut to meet those measurements. Leg opening width is confirmed before shipping.

Standard leg opening widths for a 31 inch inseam at size 34: Lean 7.5", Basic 7.75", Relaxed 8", Athletic 8.25". Measurements grade 1/8" per waist size. Full leg opening widths for all fits and sizes are in the size chart.
