How to Measure Men’s T-Shirts

We use 6 fit points to help you build your T-Shirt Fit Profile. In this article, we’ll show you how to navigate the following fit points: Size, Neck, Stomach Fit, Sleeve Fit, Sleeve Length, and Overall Length.

Size (Shoulders & Chest)

Your shoulder and chest width determine your Size.

We offer 11 Sizes, including In-Between Sizes for fine tuning. 1/2″ across the shoulders and 1″ across the chest separate the sizes.

  • Small
  • Small/Medium
  • Medium
  • Medium/Large
  • Large
  • Large/XL
  • XL
  • XL/2XL
  • 2XL
  • 2XL/3XL
  • 3XL
How to Measure Shoulders

To gauge your Todd Shelton t-shirt size, you can measure a t-shirt you already own.

Start with your best fitting t-shirt through the shoulders. Lay your t-shirt face down on a rigid table (not a bed or other soft surface) like shown below. Measure from shoulder point to shoulder point.

Measure again to make sure your measurements are consistent. Match your measurement to the list below.

  • Labeled Size = Shoulder Measurement
  • S = 16 3/8
  • S/M = 16 7/8
  • M = 17 3/8
  • M/L = 17 7/8
  • L = 18 3/8
  • L/XL = 18 7/8
  • XL = 19 3/8
  • XL/2XL = 19 7/8
  • 2XL = 20 3/8
  • 2XL/3XL = 20 7/8
  • 3XL = 21 3/8

Think about how you would change the shoulder fit measurements to make it fit better.

How to Measure Chest

Chest is measured 1″ below the armholes, across the t-shirt.

Measure your best fitting t-shirt across the chest – this may be the same or a different t-shirt than you used for the shoulder measurement. Lay your t-shirt face up on a rigid table and measure 1″ below the armhole, across the t-shirt (like shown below).

Measure again to make sure your measurements are consistent. Match your measurement to the list below.

  • Labeled Size = Chest Measurement
  • S = 18 3/4
  • S/M = 19 3/4
  • M = 20 3/4
  • M/L = 21 3/4
  • L = 22 3/4
  • L/XL = 23 3/4
  • XL = 24 3/4
  • XL/2XL = 25 3/4
  • 2XL = 26 3/4
  • 2XL/3XL = 27 3/4
  • 3XL = 28 3/4

When matching your shoulder and chest measurements to the lists above, you may find your shoulder and chest match up to different sizes on our list. In this case, put more emphasis on the shoulder measurement when selecting your size.

Neck Fit

Some customers like a t-shirt to fit closer around the neck. For these customers we offer High-Neck.

The following Neck Fit options are available.

  • Standard (Most Popular)
  • High-Neck

High-Neck is 1/4″ higher around the neck opening compared to Standard Neck. High-Neck is a custom option, reserved for existing customers who already know their fit. New customers can access High-Neck by ordering a Fit Kit Home Try-On to first identify their size and fit, or through an exchange of their Standard Neck t-shirt.

Stomach Fit

Stomach Fit is the area around your navel. With 4 stomach fit options, you can control how much fabric you have around your stomach.

The following Stomach Fit options are separated by 1″ across the t-shirt at stomach.

  • Stomach Fit (Ranking of popularity)
  • Extra Slim (2%)
  • Slim (36%)
  • Standard (48%)
  • Classic (3%)
How to Measure Stomach

To gauge your stomach fit, you can measure a t-shirt you already own.

Start with your best fitting t-shirt through the stomach. Lay your t-shirt face up on a rigid table, like shown above. Smooth out all creases and folds, especially hidden folds on the backside of the t-shirt. Measure across the t-shirt halfway between armhole and bottom hem.

  • Labeled Size = Standard (not Slim) Stomach Measurement
  • S = 18
  • S/M = 19
  • M = 20
  • M/L = 21
  • L = 22

  • XL = 24
  • XL/2XL = 25
  • 2XL = 26
  • 2XL/3XL = 27
  • 3XL = 28

Measure again to make sure your measurements are consistent. Compare your stomach measurement to the list above. Slim is 1″ less than Standard. To compare Extra Slim, Slim, and Classic Stomach measurements, see our T-Shirt Size Chart.

Sleeve Fit

Sleeve Fit accounts for the roominess throughout your sleeve, from bicep to forearm. Two Sleeve Fit options successfully fit all of our customers.

  • Sleeve Fit (Ranking of popularity)
  • Slim (54%)
  • Standard (46%)

If you have larger than average biceps, you’ll need Standard Sleeve Fit. If your biceps are average or leaner than average, Slim Sleeve Fit is a popular option.

How to Measure Sleeve Fit

Sleeve fit for SHORT SLEEVES is measured across the sleeve opening. Sleeve fit for LONG SLEEVES is measured across the elbow.

You can measure a t-shirt you already own, like shown above. Compare your measurement to our T-Shirt Size Chart.

Sleeve Length

We offer sleeve lengths for LONG SLEEVE T-Shirts in 1″ increments. For SHORT SLEEVE, we offer two sleeve lengths: 7.5 inch and 9 inch.

How to Measure Sleeve Length

Sleeve Length requires basic math to calculate. To calculate Sleeve Length, you need to combine two measurements: 1) your sleeve length and 2) half of your shoulder width (the width of the shoulders has an impact on sleeve length).

To gauge your Long Sleeve sleeve length, you can measure a t-shirt you already own.

Choose your t-shirt with the best sleeve length. First, measure down the sleeve, from top of the shoulder seam to end of cuff, like shown above. Next, measure across the shoulders (as we described earlier in the article), and divide by 2. Then add those two measurements.

For example, if your sleeve length measured 25″ and half of your total shoulder measurement is 9.5″ – your sleeve length totals 34.5″.

For Short Sleeves, measure from the shoulder seam to sleeve opening, like shown above.

Overall Length

Your height and belly size will determine your necessary overall length. We offer 5 Overall Length options.

  • Length (Ranking of popularity)
  • 2″ Shorter (4%)
  • 1″ Shorter (12%)
  • Standard (65%)
  • 1″ Longer (10%)
  • 2″ Longer (9%)
How to Measure Overall Length

We measure Overall Length from the highest point of the shoulder down to t-shirts bottom hem.

To gauge your overall length, you can measure a t-shirt you already own.

Choose your t-shirt with the best fitting length. Measure from the highest point of the shoulder down to bottom of hem, like shown above. Compare your measurement to the list below.

  • Labeled Size = Standard Length
  • S = 26
  • S/M = 26 1/2
  • M = 27
  • M/L = 27 1/2
  • L = 28
  • L/XL = 28 1/2
  • XL = 29
  • XL/2XL = 29 1/2
  • 2XL = 30
  • 2XL/3XL = 30 1/2
  • 3XL = 31

Think about how you would change the length to make it fit better.

The list above only shows Standard Length options. Length options are also available in 2″ Shorter, 1″ Shorter, 1″ Longer, and 2″ Longer than Standard. For a complete list of length option measurements, see our T-Shirt Size Chart.
