Glenn’s Denim is the culmination of Glenn Liburd’s 30-year infatuation with denim, and his commitment to mastering the art and craft of making the world’s best jeans. Shifting landscape: major brands no longer Made in USA
The Big 3 – Levi’s, Wrangler, and Lee – no longer manufacture jeans in America. Just a few years ago, both Levi’s and Wrangler offered a Made in USA jean, often priced over $200, but a recent search confirms these lines have been discontinued.
This trend extends beyond the traditional giants. Even well-known brands like AG Jeans and Lucky, despite their lingering reputation for USA-made products, are no longer producing jeans here in the USA.
Consequently, consumers committed to purchasing American-made jeans will need to discover and embrace new brands, as there are now no household names manufacturing jeans in America.
What should an American-made jean cost?
For many seeking Made in USA jeans, adjusting to a higher price tag can initially be a challenge. To understand why, consider that even brands like Levi’s and Wrangler, despite not being known for high prices, sold Made in USA jeans for around $250-$275 just a few years ago. This demonstrates that even they, when manufacturing domestically, arrived at a similar cost structure.
The primary drivers of these prices are significantly higher American labor costs and factory overhead. Unlike massive offshore facilities, American factories also lack the enormous scale that typically drives down production costs, further contributing to the premium price of a truly American-made jean.
The origin of American-made jeans
In 1873, the US government granted Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis a patent for adding rivets to men’s work pants, thereby creating the first Made in USA jean. Since then, nearly 150 years later, jeans have evolved from their workwear roots into an everyday American clothing essential.
