What is rise?
Rise is the measurement from the top of the waistband down to the crotch seam. A jean has a front and a back rise.
The front rise is the main rise measurement, listed more often than back rise on size charts. Front rise measurements will indicate if a jean is a mid-rise, high-rise, or low-rise.
Do you need more rise?
Rise affects two things: how high you can wear jeans on your waist and/or how much room you’ll have in the crotch area.
If you cannot pull the jeans up high enough on your waist, you need more rise. If you can pull the jean up to where you want to wear it, but the crotch is tight, you need more rise.
Keep in mind, if your jean has too much rise, the jean can sag under the crotch, which you may want to avoid.
9 brands making high rise jeans for men
We searched over 30 brands from household names like Levi’s and Wranglers to premium niche brands. Unfortunately, most brands don’t offer rise measurements on their size charts. 9 brands list rise measurements 11 1/2″ or over for a 34 waist, classic fit jean. For this article, we consider 11 1/2″ be the beginning of high rise jean measurements.

How to determine your target rise measurement
The easiest way to determine the rise measurement you need is to measure the rise on jeans you already own. If you don’t own a jean, you can measure your pants.
Even if you don’t own a jean with an acceptable rise, measuring will provide insight. Try on the jeans to find which jean fits best through the rise, and identify its measurements. Then guess at how much more rise you’ll need to get a better fit.
For example, if your best fitting jean has an 11” rise, but it’s slightly tight in the crotch, you may need an 11 ½” rise. If your best fitting jean has an 11” rise, but it’s way too tight in the crotch, you may need a 12” rise.
Searching size charts for high rise jeans for men
Most jean brands post their rise measurements in their size charts online. Once you determine the rise you need by trying on jeans you already own and measuring the rise, you can search size charts for your target rise measurements.
When searching size charts, keep in mind that rise measurements change depending on fit. Generally, Relaxed jeans will have higher rise measurements and skinny jeans have lower rise measurements.
Also, rise measurements scale up and down depending on size. At Todd Shelton, we scale 1/8” per size. For example, a size 32 Basic fit will have a 10 3/8” front rise. Size 33 Basic will have a 10 ½” front rise. The front rise increased 1/8” from 32 to 33.
When searching size charts online, a brand may post a rise measurement for only one size, like 32. Considering rise measurements will be vary based on waist size, contact the brand to find for measurements for your size.
