The rock and guitar community\u00a0has been left out of the pop and hip-hop surge that\u2019s dominated young people\u2019s listening during the past decade. Damian Fanelli, writer\/editor at Guitar World<\/a><\/em>\u2014by far the most influential publication for rock\u2019s serious thinkers\u2014sees signs that change is coming.<\/p>\n

For the first time in history, catalog album sales are outpacing new album sales (A \u201ccatalog\u201d album is at least 18 months old). However, this stat refers only to physical album sales and doesn\u2019t include digital. More here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When you add up physical and digital sales, new music is still outpacing older music. But that doesn\u2019t diminish the significance of this trend. Young people are discovering vinyl records\u2013and since older music is more readily available on vinyl than new music\u2013older\u00a0music is being rediscovered.<\/p>\n

Regardless of how young people are finding older music, they\u2019re finding it, and Fanelli\u2019s work supports this trend. \u201cBeing able to\u00a0influence culture is one of my favorite aspects of this job,\u201d he says. A hugely popular piece of content on Guitar World<\/em>\u2019s site is a series of videos of 16-year-old French classic-rock guitar phenom Tina S. This video<\/a> alone has almost\u00a014 million views.<\/p>\n
