Denim mills add a starch-like substance, called &#8220;sizing&#8221; to make it stiff. The stiffness makes it easier for the denim mill to manage a consistent width throughout a roll. Not washed at the time of these photos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Raw jeans can pick up fades better for two reasons: 1) the stiffness of the denim creates more defined creases, and 2) a unwashed jean has experienced no color loss from washing &#8211; allowing for greater contrast between faded areas and non-faded areas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/toddshelton.com\/blog\/jeans\/are-raw-denim-jeans-worth-it\">We wrote about the process of breaking in raw denim jeans here<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"selvedge-raw\">Is raw denim and selvedge denim the same thing?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No, they are two different things. Raw relates to how denim is washed, or rather, not washed. Selvedge relates to how denim is woven. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can buy raw selvedge jeans or washed selvedge jeans. <a href=\"https:\/\/toddshelton.com\/blog\/jeans\/selvedge-denim\">We wrote about selvedge jeans here<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"raw-rigid\">Is raw, rigid, and shrink-to-fit the same thing?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, different brands use raw, or rigid, or shrink-to-fit for describing their unwashed denim jeans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sanforized\">Sanforized or unsanforized denim<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two types of denim: sanforized and unsanforized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sanforization\">Sanforization<\/a> is a process that denim mills use when finishing denim that reduces the amount of shrinkage the denim will experience when washing. Jeans made from sanforized denim won&#8217;t shrink enough to affect your size and fit decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeans made from unsanforized denim will shrink enough that you must adjust for shrinkage. Hence shrink-to-fit, &#8220;it&#8217;s too big now, but it will shrink-to-fit.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/toddshelton.com\/blog\/jeans\/wash-raw-denim-jeans\">We wrote about washing raw denim jeans here<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"consider\">Should you consider buying raw jeans?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here at <a href=\"https:\/\/toddshelton.com\">Todd Shelton<\/a>, we don&#8217;t recommend raw jeans unless a customer brings it up first because once washed jeans are usually a better choice for most customers, they&#8217;re more comfortable and provide similar fading results. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/toddshelton.com\/jeans\/pro-selvedge-raw-jean\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"470\" src=\"https:\/\/toddshelton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/2020_0220_raw_denim4.jpg\" alt=\"Raw\/dark denim photo\" class=\"wp-image-5944\" srcset=\"https:\/\/toddshelton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/2020_0220_raw_denim4.jpg 940w, https:\/\/toddshelton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/2020_0220_raw_denim4-675x338.jpg 675w, https:\/\/toddshelton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/2020_0220_raw_denim4-768x384.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Some customers like the color of Raw vs Darks. But it&#8217;s the same denim and once Raw is washed, it will look like Darks.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Raw jeans are NOT the best option for most guys, BUT they are the best option for some guys (that&#8217;s the reason we sell them).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Questions we might ask a customer who is evaluating raw denim jeans:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How often do you like to wash your jeans?<\/strong><br>If you like to wash often, there&#8217;s no reason to buy raw denim jeans, buy a <a href=\"https:\/\/toddshelton.com\/jeans\/pro-selvedge-dark-wash\">dark wash jeans<\/a> instead. Because with raw, you&#8217;ll want to go as long as possible without washing, like once or twice a year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How important is comfortable clothing to you?<\/strong><br>If comfy clothes are important to you, don&#8217;t buy raw denim jeans. Raw jeans can take months to break in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you care about the process of breaking in a jean from scratch?<\/strong> <br>Breaking in a jean from scratch is the only reason to buy raw. Darks has been washed once.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If a customer is on the fence between <a href=\"https:\/\/toddshelton.com\/jeans\/pro-selvedge-dark-wash\">Pro Original Darks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/toddshelton.com\/jeans\/pro-selvedge-raw-jean\">Pro Original Raw<\/a>, we will always recommend Pro Original Darks.
